Easy New Year's Resolutions For The Best Version of You

Happy New Year everyone!. Did you start the New Year with a list of new resolutions? It’s pretty clear from the sudden surge of people in gyms at this time of year that one of the top resolutions on everyone’s mind is to get fit, get healthy, and lose the Christmas gains!

 

Every New Year, so many of us set unrealistic resolutions for ourselves. We have rose tinted dreams of becoming health gurus, having 6 pack abs, and developing the fitness a marathon runner. Let’s be real - we are only human! There is a belief that with the New Year comes the ability to change ourselves overnight into what we believe is ‘the perfect human’. With so much conflicting information out there to ‘help’ us, it’s no wonder The University of Scranton estimates only 8% of people actually see their resolutions through.

 

 Let’s not be so hard on ourselves. We are all human beings with incredible capabilities. With that in mind, here are my top new year’s resolutions that are easy to follow - but more importantly - easy to maintain...

1. Be Kind to Others

No-one will remember you as the person who worked twelve hours overtime a week, or who had a lovely toned physique. We want to be remembered for our generosity, kindness, selflessness and for being the person who could always light up a room. Our appearances does not define us, nor does the odd greasy takeaway now and then. What defines us is our personalities – our care for others and our treatment of our planet and all that inhabits it.

 

2. Learn to Love Yourself

I read a wonderful quote this morning ‘You are so used to your own features that you don’t see how beautiful you are to strangers’. I think we are all victim to this. Take a step back and evaluate all of the things that you love (or at least somewhat like) about yourself. Repeat these things to yourself first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It may seem silly at first, but after a while you will genuinely start believe them.

 

3. Drink More Water

Another simple, yet effective hack to really improve your overall physical and mental health is simply to drink more water. A dehydrated body/ mind will make us feel tired and sluggish both on the inside and out. Make sure you’re getting in your 2 litres a day to stay alert, keep focussed, feel energised, and keep your body running efficiently. Drinking water can also help to boost weight loss, improve your skin and detoxify your body.

 

Top Tip: If you find plain water too boring, try cutting up some fresh fruit and adding it to your water bottle. Try to avoid dilutes and cordials due to their high sugar/ artificial sweetener content!

4. Eat Your Greens

6. Take a Good Daily Probiotic.

7.  Keep an Exercise Regime that is maintainable in the long term

If you absolutely despise jogging, there is no point in forcing yourself to trudge the pavements. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy, whether it’s lifting weights, swimming, cycling, the rowing machine - anything! I know I find going to a couple of fitness classes a week with a friend my favourite thing to do. For me it feels more like a fun social event than a chore. I also really enjoy sticking my headphones on and going for a long walk. If you feel like you don’t have time, why not try walking to work, or eating at your desk and going for a stroll through the park on your lunch break instead? Try to do 2 and half hours of exercise a week for optimum health results.

 

8. Eat Fat

 Of course by this I mean healthy fats! Get some omega’s and unsaturated fats into you to boost your metabolism, get glowing skin, satiate your appetite, and boost your energy levels. We promise - they won’t make you gain weight - quite the opposite actually. Some super tasty fat sources are salmon, avocado, toasted nuts and seeds, egg yolks, and olive oil.

 

9. Cut down on Sugar

Sugar in excess, can be your body’s worst enemy. Scientists have found that sugar triggers the same pleasure areas in the brain as cocaine and heroin, making it one of the most addictive substances on the planet. Sugar is a simple a glucose molecule which our bodies use for energy. However, if our bodies’ take in more glucose than we require, it is turned into fat and stored in our bodies for when we need it. 10. Listen to Your Body.

When it comes to deciding what to eat, when to rest, when to exercise etc, so many of us ignore our bodies and the signals they send us. Your body knows exactly what it needs at any given time. If you’re craving a certain food - eat it (once it’s the healthy version). If you are craving something unhealthy, think about it logically. Craving Chocolate? Rest when you need to rest. If your body is tired and sore - skip the workout today. Eat lot’s of nutritious, clean foods, and get the early night your body needs.

 

REMEMBER - it takes 21 days to create a habit and 3 days to break it, so stick with it. Avoid beating yourself up if you drop the ball, but get back on the bandwagon ASAP. Set goals that are realistic and achievable for you, and don’t focus on what everyone else around you is doing. Let’s work on being the best version of you that you can possibly be!
