What's The Scoop on: CBD Oil

Posted: Thu, 23 March 2017, 10:33

CBD oil is the hottest supplement to hit Irish health store shelves this 2017. There is a lot of questions and misinformation behind this product, but at the same time, the results from those taking it are phenomenal. To clear the air and give you the chance to see if it may be the supplement for you, we put together a little Q and A on what it is, how it works, and if it could be the supplement for you.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a component found in hemp that works alongside the body’s natural processes. It is concentrated in CBD oil so as to provide its beneficial properties.

A quick lesson on hemp…

Hemp is a variety of the plant ‘cannabis sativa’.  Before y’all go jumping to conclusions let me make this clear : hemp oil is not the same as marijuana. Why is this? Well there is a very specific chemical in the cannabis plant that causes the consumer to ‘get high’. This chemical is called THC. THC is the principal psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. Each of the 80 cannabis plant varieties contains different levels of THC.

CBD Hemp Oil contains extremely low levels of THC (less than 0.2% according to EU regulations) giving the consumer no psychoactive affects. Hemp does however contain high levels of CBD. This component works in conjunction with the body’s natural systems with tons of health benefits.

What exactly does CBD do within the body?

CBD interacts with the body via the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for keeping the body’s homeostasis (keeping everything balanced). Homeostasis is responsible for our mood, hunger, sleep, alertness, blood levels, appetite, pain response… the list is endless.

Within the endocannabinoid system are hundreds of tiny cannabinoid receptors which the clever ol’ human maintains itself. Unfortunately due to the stressful lives we lead both internally and externally, our poor cannabinoid systems can get a little overlooked, especially as our diets are extremely low in cannabinoids.

CBD oil helps with the upkeep of these cannabinoid receptors and therefore the overall health of our endocannabinoid system ensuring homeostasis.

What happens if we are deficient in these cannabinoids?

While there are plenty of theories, the research is still on-going and not yet set in stone. Bearing that in mind however, scientists reckon that a deficiency in cannabinoids can cause a variety of problems ranging from anxiety, migraines and sleep problems to other more troublesome conditions.

In summary, a deficiency in cannabinoids resulting from the body’s low production of them, could potentially have an inpact on the neurological system. Because a lack of cannabinoids directly affects your homeostasis, there are a huge variety of problems that can come about as a result.

Should I be taking CBD oil?

Honestly? It’s tricky to know and we do recommend doing some further research based on your reasoning to take the supplement. Because we don’t have a lot of information surrounding our endocannabinoid system it’s hard to know if or when we are deficient. If you have read up on it and you’ve decided that it’s something you want to try, it is safe to take at the recommended dosage, provided you are not currently taking any medication which may be contra-indicated – or if you are currently suffering from any condition in which case we always advise checking with your GP before starting a new supplement. This product is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How long does CBD oil take to work?

It can take from a few minutes up to a couple of hours to work depending on how you use it.

Topical use for areas of inflammation or acne gives a slow and even absorption reaping long term benefits.

Ingesting the oil as is can take from 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on how much food is in your stomach and when you last ate. Taking the oil on an empty stomach leads to faster absorption.

Taking the oil under the tongue is the 2nd quickest method of absorption after inhalation by vaping.

How do I take CBD oil orally?

2 drops under the tongue daily is the recommended dosage.
